Cleaning with Essential Oils

Today was cleaning day at my house! A great excuse to use the oils (as if I needed one….) It is really important to me to clean my house without the use of harsh chemicals. I don’t want the headache caused by the synthetic aromas, I want to take care of mother earth, and I want to reduce the risk of cancer within my family. My supplies include: baking soda, vinegar, water, Dr. Bronner’s soap, doTERRA essential oils and a few reusable rags.

Sink/Tub/Toilet Scrub: Just 3 cups of baking soda and 10 drops of lemongrass essential oil from doTERRA and I can clean every sink in the house! The smell is amazing and this mix works better than any brand of sink scrub cleanser. Just use a bowl or small jam jar, place the baking soda in the bowl and add the essential oil, plus an optional 1 tablespoon of Dr. Bronner’s castille soap (makes a creamy cleanser). Use a tablespoon of this mixture per sink and 1/2 cup for the bath, shower or toilet. Scrub with a sponge or rag ad rinse. Clean, fresh, chemical free bathroom!

Carpet Deodorizer: Pets, heavy traffic, smoking, spills, mildew, and other elements of daily life  can cause unpleasant odors in rugs and carpets. I love freshening up my home with this simple recipe. Take 1 cup of baking soda and 5 drops of your favorite essential oil. I like to use Purify from doTERRA or rosemary and lemongrass. These 3 oils have the side benefit of warding of fleas and ticks. Sprinkle mixture on the carpet, wait 10-20 mins and then vacuum it up. Mmmmmmm! Ahhhhhh! Fresh and clean carpets!

Mouse Deterrent: I found mouse droppings in my house today!!!!! Thank goodness for the oils! Peppermint essential oil is an effective base ingredient for many of the deterrents. So if you have a rat or mouse population growing your home, activate the power of peppermint.  You can do a few things to help you ward off the mice: 1. place a drop or two of peppermint in your mop water. You can mop almost any type of floor with a solution of ¼ cup liquid Castile soap and 2 gallons warm water. If the floors are greasy, add ¼ cup distilled white vinegar to the bucket. 2. Place cotton balls , with a drop or two of peppermint essential oil on them, all around the house in the special nooks and crannies that mice like to hide. 3. Place 10 drops of peppermint essential oil in 8-16 ounces of water. Shake and the spray the baseboards and other areas of your home that the mice droppings have been spotted. 4. Grow peppermint in your home! It makes a lovely house plant and the aroma will ward off mice and other pests.

Dish Soap: Take a glass soap pump container (Avoid using plastic with essential oils as the essential oil will eat at the plastic, and the essential oil will become ruined over a short period of time. Amber, green, or blue glass is best) , 20 drops of wild orange essential oil from doTERRA and a 1:1 ration of Dr. Bronner’s castille soap and water. A wonderful, effective, SLS and synthetic fragrance free dish soap!

Mold: Take a glass spray bottle of water and for every 6 ox of water add 15 drops of OnGuard. Not only does this make a great spray cleanser for mold but you can also use it for an antibacterial/antifungal/antiviral surface cleanser, Make a pocket size spray for public restrooms, the gym, doorknobs, classroom desks and other areas you might wish for disinfectant powers! It also makes for a soap and water free handwash when traveling. Great for kids!

What ideas do you have for using the oils in housecleaning? I would love to hear your ideas and experiences.
